[UPDATED July 24, 2024] The new school year is right around the corner, and no matter which year of college you’re entering, it’s time to start looking for an internship. Depending on your field of interest, the application process will vary, so we went ahead and put together a list of internship deadlines and requirements by industry. After the list, you’ll see some additional tips to keep in mind before and during the application process.

Consulting

Deadlines

Applications for summer consulting internships typically open just as the school year begins. So, if you want an internship in the summer of 2025, you’ll want to apply in the early fall 2024. Some applications may be open as early as June of the previous summer (yes, one year in advance!). As for application deadlines, they can be anywhere from early fall to late January. Keep in mind that deadlines vary from company to company, so make sure you take note of each deadline as you begin the application process.

Requirements

Most consulting firms are looking for interns who maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher while studying for a degree in business, economics, finance, or other related fields. Candidates actively participating in various campus organizations are far more attractive, so it would be to your advantage to sign up to at least one.

Banking and Finance

Deadlines

Most large banking and finance firms typically begin recruiting summer interns nearly a year in advance. Many firms begin recruiting in August and early September for the following summer, while interviews take place during the fall, winter, and spring. Application deadlines vary greatly by firm, so it’s crucial that you research each firm you’re interested in and plan ahead.

Requirements

To qualify for most finance internships, you’ll need to be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program studying finance or a related field. However, note that many top finance firms also value degrees outside of economics, finance, accounting, and business. So, don’t be afraid to apply just because you’re majoring in history, English, political science, or philosophy. Still, a strong GPA will be required, and firms often take on interns who demonstrate excellent analytical and quantitative skills.

Marketing

Deadlines

Marketing summer internships typically open just as the fall semester begins, and deadlines can come as early as September or October, though some deadlines will be in January. Again, specific dates vary depending on the company, so it’s essential you check each internship program you’re interested in.

Requirements

A strong GPA is a requirement for any marketing internship program. Companies favor candidates who possess creative problem-solving skills, the ability to multitask, and an understanding of all major social media platforms.

Engineering

Deadlines

Companies that offer summer engineering internships start accepting applications in the fall semester (so, the fall of 2024 for summer 2025). This field is particularly competitive, so it’s best to get a head start on your application if you want to stand a chance of landing a top internship.

Requirements

A GPA of 3.0 or higher is a requirement for almost every engineering internship. Candidates must be studying for a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Along with this, candidates must demonstrate working knowledge of CAD software.

Technology

Tech companies typically begin recruiting summer interns nearly one year advance: in August for the following summer. Depending on the company, deadlines can be anywhere between early fall and early spring. As always, take a look at each company’s website to determine the specific application deadline.

Requirements

Candidates must be studying for a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or other related fields. Companies typically favor candidates who understand a variety of programming languages, and who display strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with high attention to detail.

Our top-ranked software engineering and development, data analytics, and IT internship programs would be a good place to start your research on the various application process deadlines and requirements.

Additional Tips

First and foremost, don’t rush your applications. Start looking early, and take note of what companies are looking for in their internship descriptions. Next, take the time to tailor your resume, linking your experience and skills directly to each individual job description. Remember to take advantage of any resume-building programs your school offers. In most cases, you’ll also be required to write a cover letter for your internship application (and when you do, don’t forget to tailor your cover letters to each individual job description). Finally, it’s important to run through some practice interviews with a trusted friend or family member.

If you’re just starting college or you’re in your second year, now would be a great time to start participating in campus organizations. These organizations often hold various events, which are great networking opportunities. Always remember to add new network connections to your LinkedIn profile and do your best to stay in contact. Getting started early on with participating in campus organizations and building your professional network will make you far more attractive when it comes time to apply to internships.
